Young people from Bromley Scouts raised a staggering £12,000 for Demelza House Children’s Hospice by packing shopping bags before Christmas.
The Scouts were overwhelmed by the generosity of customers at Sainsbury’s in Bromley and Chislehurst in the six days before Christmas, and more than doubled their target of £5,500 to buy two Impact Mobile Sensory units for the New Demelza House Hospice to be opened early in 2009 in Eltham.
The Scouts were inspired to raise funds after they undertook community work in the grounds of the Demelza House Children’s Hospice near Sittingbourne in the summer. The group helped with projects including an outdoor storytelling circle, painting a jungle hut and clearance work in the gardens of the Hospice.
James Allen Assistant District Commissioner Bromley Scouts said
“Massive thanks and congratulations to all who have worked so incredibly hard. With over 100 people taking part at various times over the 14 shifts and 58 hours over the six day period it was a first class effort and fantastic representation of Bromley Scouts, I am sure those at Demelza House will be absolutely delighted. We are extremely grateful for the support of Sainsbury and their staff and the generosity of their Customers in these tough economic times”.
Colin Goodwin Chairman Bromley District said “This was a fantastic effort on behalf everybody who took part. In an age when everybody is very critical of young people this is a fine example of the positive contribution they can make to Society with the help and guidance of organisations such as Scouting".
